Any Questions? Ask Tsugaaru-chan!

Have any questions about Tsugaru or living in Japan in general?   Any question at all, I may look like I'm five years old, but I have an answer!

  2. Tsugaru-chan - help! My friend is visiting soon and she wants to eat some local specialities. Any suggestions? What are some famous Aomori foods?

  3. Hiya John! I'm sure Mike or Kelly will be able to give you some restaurant recommendations, but if you'd like to try local produce I recommend Aruja in Tsuruta Town. It sells locally made fruits and vegetables as well as baked goods and also has a small restaurant where you can eat Steuben grape gyouza. Click here for a map!

  4. You should visit Takayama Inari Shrine in Shariki. It's beautiful and not well-known by JETs in the area.

  5. I'm going to be moving back to Japan after 5 years back State side. I'm new to Aomori though and would like to know how the weather is there. I have heard that the winters can be brutal. What kinds of temp and snow fall should I expect?

  6. Hi Anonymous!

Aomori winters are pretty intense, with the low during January is -5 degrees C and the high at 1.5 degrees C. Snow fall, however, depends on where you are in Aomori. Near Tsugaru, we had snow at least a couple of times a week and winds made it so that I scooped my driveway every morning and every night.

Also, many people (including me) turn of the heater at night, as electricity is expensive, so an electric blanket or a heated water bottle is helpful to stay warm in the winter cold.

However, Tsugaru is beautiful during the winter, and skiing is great! There is also a couple of huge snow ball fights around the province and lots of winter festivals as well!

    Where are you moving to?

  7. Thanks for the info Mike. It sounds like it won't be quiet as bad as I feared. I'm not exactly sure where the location will be yet. I do have a second question though. I'm moving for work, but I'm going to be bringing my girlfriend with me. I know that she only has 3 months on a holiday VISA and can only get an additional 3 months (for a total of 6) extension. She really wants to work (it's a pride thing with her), but finding work that a foreigner can do in that area has been hard to find online. Do you have any suggestions? She doesn't have a 4 year degree yet, so she won't qualify for public school ALT jobs. I think she would do well at a private school, but I know they rarely are willing to sponsor a VISA
